Potential Characters for "Star-Crossed"

Puck: A underlying fairy, who is a good apprentice/servant. Before the play, he sees and falls for (Reiza), who is human and royalty. He is smitten with her and plagued by unrequited love. He accepts the offer from Oberon to become an apprentice. He is fascinated with magic, and is eager to learn. As a result of being tricked by Oberon, he loses his memory of the girl he loves and becomes Oberon's personal servant.

Oberon: King of the fairies. He has a bad temper and is quick to blame others, and before the start of the play has had a quarrel with his wife, Titania. He has sworn not to be reconciled with her until he finds a pair of human lovers who have remained faithful to one another despite all troubles and temptations. He hears of Reiza and Huon, and hopes to use them as a way to patch up his relationship wit his wife. (Based off of the English Opera, "Oberon" written by Carl Maria von Weber) His apprentice, Ariel, is leaving his service, and he is searching for another. He hears of Puck, and also that Puck is in love with Reiza, so he takes Puck on and plans to sabotage any hope of a relationship Puck has with the human princess. He is a master of magic, and a good ruler, but very stubborn.

Ariel: Another fairy, and servant, like Puck. He is leaving the service of Oberon, and is planning to go to an island to serve Prospero. (Prospero has saved Ariel from Sycorax's spell, and Ariel is indebted to him.) He tells Oberon of Puck, who is a close friend of his. He knows that Puck is searching for work and that he is a quick learner. He also tells Oberon that he is concerned for him because Puck is suffering from a bad case of lovesickness, as he is in love with Reiza. Ariel is similar to a chorus character, as he introduces much of what has happened before the play begins.

Love Interest (Reiza?) : Daughter of the Caliph in Baghdad. She is young and betrothed to a man she doesn't love. Emperor Charlamagne sends Huon to kill her betrothed and wed her, in an attempt to force ties between France and the Baghdad province. She is unaware of Puck's love for her, and therefore does not return his feelings. She falls for Sir Huon.

The Caliph of Baghdad: Reiza's father, important Islamic Ruler. Charlamagne is hoping to form a relationship between their empires by sending one of his knights to marry the Caliph's daughter.

Titania: Oberon's wife, the queen of fairies. She is much more rational and patient than Oberon is.

Sir Huon: Charlamagne's knight. A nobleman who is brave and obedient, he goes to Baghdad to murder Prince Babekan and marry Reiza. He is the typical "knight in shining armor" character.

Prince Babekan: Reiza's betrothed, who is murdered by Huon.
